A Farm Township That Waited Until 1961 to Formalize
Holt's roots go back to 1837 land purchases by Frederick Luther and John Norris, growing as a purely agricultural settlement first known as Delhi Center. It didn't take its current name until a February 10, 1860 post-office renaming (to avoid confusion with Delhi Mills in Washtenaw County), and it stayed unincorporated until Delhi Charter Township was formally established on September 18, 1961.
Housing Growth Followed the Rails, Then Kept Going
The Michigan United Railways interurban connected Holt to Lansing in the early 1900s and drove the area's first real residential growth, then Delhi Charter Township saw a documented 15 percent population jump between 2000 and 2010 that pushed new subdivisions and schools into what had been farmland.
