Built Directly on a Lake That's Changed Its Name Once
Haslett grew up on the shore of what was originally called Pine Lake, where James H. Haslett built a Spiritualist resort in 1887 that pulled in thousands of weekend visitors each summer; the community took his name by 1895. The lake itself was renamed Lake Lansing in 1927, simply because Michigan had too many other lakes already named Pine Lake.

Because Haslett's original development sat directly on lake shoreline rather than set back from it, homes in the oldest part of town face a different water-exposure profile -- seasonal lake level, shoreline seepage, storm runoff into the lake -- than homes built later farther from the water.
