Settled in 1833, Formalized as a Township in 1836
Captain David Scott settled DeWitt in 1833 after moving from Ann Arbor, platting the land himself; the Michigan legislature created DeWitt Township on March 23, 1836, with the first township meeting held at Scott's own house on April 8, 1836. DeWitt served as the Clinton County seat from the county's 1831 creation until December 1857.
A 1930 Fire Left Its Own Mark on the Housing Stock
DeWitt incorporated as a village in 1929, and a fire the following year destroyed eight buildings in town, meaning some of DeWitt's oldest-looking structures actually date to a rebuilding push in the early 1930s rather than the original 1830s township era. That mixed-age housing stock, plus growth brought by the Lansing, St. Johns and St. Louis Railway in the early 1900s, means water category and material porosity need on-site confirmation rather than an assumption based on a home's apparent age.
